CAPTAIN’S BLOG No 01 MARCH 2008
Well it ’s happened. The Drive In has taken place. The weather was very kind, in spite of the forecast (who said the sun shines on the righteous!!). It is a pretty nerve racking experience and Lady Captain Di Batterham and I were both very relieved to hit the ball in a forward direction. Thank you to all who had a bet, and congratulations to Mick Newton and Irene Payne who calculated/estimated/guessed the exact distances hit. Many thanks to all who helped make it a very special day.
- Congratulations to Men’s Mail on Sunday team - Paul Frith, Stuart Marriott, Michael Reed, Chris Webb, Scott Wormleighton. They beat Wellingborough in Round 2 on Saturday 8th March. Details of the next opponents are awaited.
- The Captain’s Charity this year is Heart Link. There will be a specific fund raising event during the year but I thought it would be a ‘good’ idea to re-introduce ‘Big Bertha’, the bunker on the right hand side of the 9th green, as the Captain’s bunker. Any player whose ball finds its way into Big Bertha is asked to pay the grand sum of 50 pence ( you may take as many shots as you like to get out, 50 pence covers the lot!) in to the Charity Jar which Adam will have on the bar. You will not be chased for your cash; let your conscience be your guide.
- Team Captains are as follows : First Team : David Bywater; Vice Captain Roy Millard is 2nd Team Captain but as a result of his very recent knee operation Brian Payne has agreed to be his ADC; Seniors : Michael Potter; Under 35s : Chris Webb; Juniors : Patrick Marston; Rabbits : Colin Forknall; Mixed : Joyce Calow; Social Golf : Brian Payne.
- Team Sheets are on the notice boards. Team golf is a wonderful way to play new courses and meet new golfing friends. Why not make yourself available for selection but please remember teams are needed for home as well as away matches!
- Illegal Clubs: Full details are available via www.randa.or/index If you are unsure do check. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that their clubs are legal.
- There was concern recently about a ‘marked’ van on the car park. It belonged to a very new Corporate Member who was unaware of the situation and the problem should now be resolved. Suitable apologies were offered and accepted.
- Captain’s Supper: Friday 14th March: Hope to see you there. Tickets with Adam.
- Course care: We now have a course we can all be proud of. Let each of us make a contribution when we can – repair pitch marks, rake bunkers and replace divots.
- Let us all aim for a successful, harmonious year. Happy golfing.
- Thought for the day : the friends you make on the golf course are friends you make for life : Jessica Anderson Valentine
Eric Hill, Captain.

- The next round, the 3rd, of The Mail on Sunday is at home against Kibworth and will take place on 12th April – tee reserved 1 – 2pm.
- I am sure we all welcome and wish well for the future our new Course Manager – Andrew De Wet who has just joined us. We have a course we can be proud of so let each one of us do our bit to help all our greens staff who have done such a super job, particularly since the start of the year, during a period of interregnum : repair pitch marks, rake bunkers and replace divots.
- A reminder - my Charity this year is Heart Link. Whilst there will be a specific fund raising event during the year, but I thought it would be a ‘good’ idea to re-introduce ‘Big Bertha’, (the bunker on the right hand side of the 9th green), as the Captain’s bunker.
