Captain's Welcome

I am extremely honoured and proud to be your incoming Men’s Captain for 2022.

- Atul Patel - Men’s Captain’s Message 2022 -

There is much to live up to following the great Captains of the past (including my own brother Sunil!) and I will do my best to make my own positive impact as your Men’s Captain, as well as listen to you and promote the interests of the members at Birstall Golf Club. My hope (and aspiration) for the year ahead is that we will be able to continue to maintain the traditions that make our club so special, whilst remaining a warm and welcoming place for new members and visitors.

I would like to thank our outgoing Men’s Captain, Nish Bathia, for his excellent stewardship over the last year, including the continual support and advice Nish has offered to me as his Vice-Captain. Nish had to contend with COVID restrictions in the very early part of his captaincy but nevertheless has enjoyed a thoroughly successful year as Captain and certainly given me a tough act to follow!

I also wish the very best of luck to Andy Crane who has been chosen to be this year’s Men’s Vice-Captain, I’m delighted to have Andy’s support as my Vice-Captain and look forward to offering my own assistance to Andy wherever I can.

Alongside our incoming Lady Captain Joyce Calow, we will be hosting our Captain’s Drive-In on Sunday 6th March and I hope to see many of you at the club throughout the day. I wish Joyce a hugely successful year as Lady Captain and look forward to working with her and our Ladies section during my year as Men’s Captain.

The Scratch (First Team) league fixtures will commence on Thursday 28th April. Let us wish the team a successful year ahead as they look to bounce straight back to the promise land of Division 1 (where we belong!). I am sure all the team will welcome support at the fixtures home and away so, if you can, please come along and give them this support.

Let us hope that the year of 2022 will see us put the turmoil of the last two years well and truly behind us and establish the new normality. There is much to look forward to this year, with our continuously excellent golf course, new catering team, and the numerous events both golf-related and social.

Finally, whilst I’m sure there will be lots for me to do, I look forward to spending time on the golf course with friends, old and new, and wish every member a great golfing year in 2022.

Atul Patel,
Men’s Captain 2022

I have been a member at Birstall Golf Club since 1998. I previously held this office in 2009, and it is with great pleasure and honour that I again have the privilege of being Lady Captain in 2022, following a highly esteemed line of past captains of the club.

- Joyce Calow – Lady Captain’s Message 2022 -

During that time I have made many, many friends, both at my home club and throughout the County and beyond. I look forward to meeting old and new friends and welcoming them to our excellent golf course and clubhouse.

For the coming season we have a busy diary of events: County handicap and scratch matches, County and club competitions, friendly matches, opens, an exchange day and a weekend away.

My charity for 2022 will be Guide Dogs. All monies raised will go towards helping the charity provide life-changing services for people with sight loss.

The Covid pandemic has been a turbulent time for the club, and indeed the whole world, but hopefully now we have come through it. I would like to thank our outgoing Lady Captain, Cindy Smith, for her hard work over the past 2 years. Her relentless enthusiasm and energy meant we all enjoyed a happy, successful 2 years. Thanks Cindy, great job!

Congratulations to Atul Patel, Men’s Captain for 2022. I wish him a very successful year, and am looking forward to working alongside him. Congratulations also to Atul’s Vice Captain, Andy Crane – best wishes Andy. In the absence of an available Lady Vice Captain for the time being, the Past Captains, Ladies’ Committee and very good friends have offered support, and I’m very grateful for this. I’m confident that we will have fun and all will be well.

I’m looking forward to a happy, healthy and successful golfing year for us all. Happy golfing everyone.

Joyce Calow,
Lady Captain 2022
